Cickens Chooks Everthing you ever wanted to know + renting them

We have lots of threads on chooks-- diets where to get them, varieties, etc
I thought it would be nice to put all our combined wisdom into one thread
What inspired me was an article in Gardening Australia.
Did you know you can RENT chooks!
    Try before you buy!
    What a great concept
GA gives two sources. Any more in other places on the planet?

Go to the next local show , and talk to the people who have brought in some chooks .
I have seen many people with them up here. Just get ones you like the look of .
BUT do not get to attached to them if you live near the bush as a great big whopping python will come and gobble some up :x

Have talked to a few folk, but always wonder how many show breeders choose that breed because it is right or because it is pretty.
Snakes are not a problem. Geese, muskovies and a couple a dogs. Snakes don't live here for long. Even had tree snake die on the electric fence, which was quite suprising.

Re: Chickens Chooks Everthing you ever wanted to know + renting

We are about to get some chooks. The tractor is ready to go but they will most free range.

We are looking at Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, Langshans or Light Sussex. Does anyone have any recommendations or things to watch out for in regard to breed choice. Would bantams of the breeds listed be better for a backyard situation?

    Thanks.

I have always been told that bantams actually need more room than most of the heavier breeds, due to them being hyperactive little buggers. I have had both australorps and RIR in the past and liked both.

    Pumpkin,

Bantams are usually better sitters so if you want to produce your own chicks you might need a few. You can always swop the eggs she's laid for other eggs, she won't mind if you do it in the early evening - but wear gloves because you'll get pecked!

One of our bantams has just hatched 17 chicks - that's a record for us !

There's also Backyard Poultry and Aussie Chook Chat, both have contributors from all over Aus and not just show breeders. There are often debates about purebreds vs crossbreds, bantams vs standard fowl and comparisons of different breeds characteristics. You'll find enough info there to keep you thinking.

You can locate sellers off either of these sites. If you get a broody you can buy eggs of a desired breed for setting although success rates once they're posted can be dodgy. There is also Farmstock which lists poultry for sale all over Aus so between them you should be able to find someone with something suitable nearby.

Don't forget within one breed you'll get different lines so it's not easy to say a breed is like 'this' or 'that'. Some lines are for show, some are kept for utility purposes. Some lines within a breed might be better layers or more active foragers, etc. eg. a recent discussion about aggression in roosters and how some pekins are far more dangerous than some larger fowl etc. You need to find out about the line, not just the breed. My own birds are from a supposedly flighty breed but have never had that problem with them (20 years) til this generation when suddenly - they've all decided they want to fly!

We've always had fluffy feet bantams. They don't fly out of our suburban backyard. They're really good at sitting on eggs and great mums. They're very gentle, and have never pecked any of us (except for our rooster, but he's an over protective so and so of our girls, so we don't mind). We get an egg a day from each girl. They are also hilarious to watch, never a dull moment in our yard.
