I live in an apartment complex, and due to a friendly land manager can plant what i like. On the north side there is a strip that once housed weeds and compacted clay that i have planted with some hardy winter greens, and i am wondering what else the forum would recommend as good shade tolerant perennials. I live in central Mississippi, USA(hot and humid summers, mild winters with occasional freezes). I found some things, but I know there are likely to be dozens more, some quite possibly better suited to the situation.
Here are some thoughts: Allium ursinum - L. Wild Garlic Amphicarpaea bracteata - Hog Peanut Akebia quinata - Akebia Aralia nudicaulis - Wild Sarsaparilla Asarum caudatum - Wild Ginger Cephalotaxus Sp. - plum yew Chaenomeles japonica - Dwarf Quince Chimaphila umbellata - Pipsissewa (medicinal) Heres a list of shade tolerant plants : https://www.pfaf.org/database/search_prop.php?HARD=4&HARD=5&HARD=6&HARD=7&SHADE=F
Pipsissewa gets my vote for favourite new word. I think I will be using it in reference to all sorts of things totally unrelated to the plant
I have successfully planted the following in containers on our balcony which faces North and gets effectively no direct sunlight: Hosta Geranium Hydrangea Blue cineraria Begonia Gabriel The Permaculture Fast Track https://home.comcast.net/~palalab
Ferns are really nice, and some can withstand the cold: https://www.fernridgefarms.com/hardyferns.html Some annual impatiens in bright pinks and oranges look great in the shade tucked in among them.
