there are far too many of these on my parents suburban property outside philadelphia. i try to be positive that i can technically eat the berries, but it's poisonous to my goats and the seeds are also very poisonous. my parents like that they are evergreen and when *endlessy* pruned form nice box-like bushes. the wood is known as ironwood, and perfect for making bows i know. what might be some alternative to this that is not poisonous to my goats, provides privacy, and edible/useful? i would at least like to get rid of a few to make room for my goats, and could get more support if i found out some other plants more compatible. any ideas, anything i'm overlooking about yew? don't get me wrong, i love the tree, but making it into a bush next to your driveway that you have to regularly prevent from attacking your car while getting nothing from it is the exact opposite of permaculture. we have about 20 of these 'bushes' on our 2 acre property, and it bothers me to no end. tia

    Re: yew trees!

Yew is avery ancient and considered-magical tree.
Very long living; often grown in religious sites such as old English church graveyards.

Check out the herbal medicinal properties of Yew.

Do the goats eat the tree?
    Does it make them sick?

Tagasaste and pigeon pea would be good to grow for fodder for your goats.

there are just too many! i would like to harvest some, and over time replace some. the goats will not eat them if something else is available, but i don't want any near their fence. i don't really want a yew tree where it has to be boxed up like that either- i think it's cruel.

are they evergreen fencing also? i am planning like corn and jerusalem artichokes and lambs quarter, with different vines feeding in and over the fence. was thinking to put a tree or two inside (protected) for them to eat when they are older.. already have one that will hang over. having difficulty knowing how the wind flows, but i want their hut to be smart.

    Re: yew trees!

    from wikipedia:

An explanation that the yews were planted to discourage farmers and drovers from letting their animals wander into the burial grounds, with the poisonous foliage being the disincentive, may be intentionally prosaic.

    Re: yew trees!

Yew contains traces of ephidrine, which I think can be used to make speed etc like pseudo-ephidrine, so on top of all it's other problems it may attract organised crime.

This is meant to be a joke, I doubt it's ever been used that way, it may even be impossible, actually, I probably should keep my mouth shut, might give them ideas.

Fresh water springs in the UK and elsewhere are often considered sacred. No doubt a clean fresh water supply was 'healing' in many ways. Not least because they often grew watercress and brooklime sources of vitamin C. Essential after along European winter eating only salted and dried food.
Many old springs and waterholes have proved archelogical treasure troves full of precious knives, swords, jewellery and other 'offerings"
