Hello - I just got some kang kong seeds - I heard about this plant on this forum I think from Sunburn. Just wondering as it is supposed to be semi aquatic if there are any special tips for growing it...does it need really good soil or can it cope with average soil? Also what do you do with it? can it be eaten raw or only cooked? thank you ....
Does way better in heavily composted wet soils, water is alright but only if you have a big nutrient load, usually summer is the time for this.Even so in water it performs a lot better when planted into a bag with a generous amount of soil.It is the water cousin of the sweet potato(ipoema batatas) called( ipoema aquatica),if you can get it right it is a fantastic crop. Best wishes Fernando
thanks - I guess that answers most of my questions, I just planted some seeds in soil and they all came up within 2-3 days despite heavy rains so I'm waiting to see how they grow.... Its interesting that they are supposed to originate from India as I've never seen that plant here and nor has my husband who's from here....
It sure does MA,I have it growing up Typhus, beautiful white flower. You can cut her right back and she just keeps performing a real gem. Fernando
I grew kang kong last year in my fish water in a 111.5 square meter gravel bed. It over grew the sides by about 50 pounds of vine and leaves every week! It did grow well in moist dirt near by also..
