    Hello to everyone!

I'm Benny.. I currently live in Melbourne with my lovely lady, we have 3 dogs, a cat and a rabbit, and a massive organic vegie and herb garden!

I'm very interested and inspired by permaculture and its ethics, and am working on returning to where I grew up in Tassie and starting a permaculture & organic farm on a grander scale.

I'm looking forward to throwing some questions out there and using the knowledge the members of this board possess to create the optimum naturally cycling food forest!

    Nice to meet you all!

    Shall we begin?! :)

    Hi Benny,

Great to have you onboard. Welcome.

It sounds like you have great place where you are and I hope that your move to Tassy and bigger, greener pastures won't be too far away.

    Kerri

    Nice introduction Bonsai
    Welcome aboard :)
There are a few here from Paradise (IMHO Tassie --or Nimbinish)
What sort of rabbit have you got and how do you stop it getting sick? This is what put me off bunnies although i love them.
What part of Tassie are you from originally?

    Hi Michaelangelica :)

    Thanks for your reply.

I have a dwarf lop currently, what do you mean about them getting sick? I've never really had issues with rabbits health, and I've had them my whole life.. what problems did/do you have?

I'm originally from the West Coast, but I've lived all over Tassie... love the place to bits and cant wait to get back there to the fresh air.

Humid and a lot of mozzies around here, so plenty of myxomatosis.
    Perhaps not in Tasmania?

Sounds wonderful !! Will you be sticking to the West? Since most of the exciting happenings in Tassie happen in the South, I would love to see more going on in other areas. What size land are you looking at buying? Is this a long term dream, or happening soon?

There are loads of mozzies around my place so thankyou for the warning. I've only had rabbits in tassie.. might have to move the little fella indoors with the rest of the zoo at night time...

Probably north west UCQ... around Devonport area... I wouldnt suggest most of the exciting things happen in the South at all, I find Hobart and surrounds to be a boring drag at the best of times. The North West is much more suited to sustainable farming due to the improved weather. The south of Tassie tends to get Antarctic winds which in my experience is not useful for fruiting, working or socialising. hehe

Considering permaculture was successfully started and resarched in Stanley suggests the North/North West coast to be the most appropriate for such a venture.

I'm looking at properties up to about 7000-10000m2, to start with.. and perhaps looking to establish something bigger further down the track.

Its been a long term dream of quite some years now, and we're pretty much over the hustle and bustle of the city, so next year I think it is all go... :)

I'm curious about your screen name. You keep Bonsai?

I do... my grandfather was a master, so I guess I follow in his footsteps..

Its also a contradiction in many ways, as I am quite a tall lad.. so the name Bonsai is an age old joke that started a while back..

I also produce and DJ electronic music in Melbourne and have a pretty decent following under the handle 'Bonsai'

Thankyou for the welcome mr wizard. :)

there is a small orchard already established with enormous organic gardens for us to build on..

so very excited to share our progress with you all.

we're in Kindred, near Forth, which is pretty much the vegie & poppy production capital of Tassie.. red basalt soils are an absolute plus too..

the property has its own permanent spring water also (not bore water), with big tanks.. the original owners have done a brilliant job on the land so far, but we've loads of space to expand and modify
