Not much point in posting that if you don't post how to access it.

You need a bittorrent client to download the file. There are different clients for different systems. If you search for 'bittorrent client' for your operating system, you'll find a range of them.

Thanks Gary, but it's not as simple as that unless you are a geek. I tried last night, and the s/w I used had only progressed 1% after 20 minutes. I had no idea if that was real or if it was a problem and no way to find out. I'm reasonably internet savvy (at a non-geek level) but I've never been able to get bittorrent sorted.

I imagine there's a copyright breach going on with that link btw.

Bit Torrents just take a long time. Thats normal. Last time I downloaded a simple chomsky lecture it took days if not more than a week. This has nothing to do with your connection speed but everything to do with the number of people who are sharing the file.

As far as copyright then you can buy the DVD set from this site:
    https://www.permacultureplants.net/

I'd rather see thousands of people making positive change than 1 person making profit. However I do believe in rewarding useful products. This was one of the few that I've purchased.

Cool.. does anyone know if this is as good of quality as the 2.5GB version: https://torrentportal.com/download/10796 ... 29.torrent

Bittorrent can be hard to grasp at first because it's different, but it is ultimately very simple to use. Just install a bittorrent client, open the .torrent file with the client, and the content will start downloading. I highly recommend the free and lightweight uTorrent: https://www.utorrent.com

Bit torrent downloads are usually much faster because you're downloading from "everybody" instead of from one computer somewhere. But that's also a downfall - in the case of the originally posted torrent, not enough people left their bit torrent program running to provide something for others to download. In other words, the more people who use it, the better, and in the case of this particular download, it wasn't popular enough to work.

If your download takes weeks, its for the same reason - not enough people 'seeding' the content...

Thanks for the file, mine downloaded overnight, started it at 9pm and was complete when i woke up :)
not to mention an extra 1.5 gig of porn and some music :p
downloading torrents are so easy once you do it a couple times, just need to have the program like azureus or bit torrent,
and winrar to extract the compressed files.

I have seeded the file too so it should be available somewhere, I found the notes file at the end good too,
prints out to 38 pages, stuck it in a folder with sleeves and it's like a book, makes it easier to follow what he's saying as it has all the blackboard drawings, he was talking and drawing at the same time so it's pretty important to see that so you know what he's on about.

OK, I downloaded Vuze (mac version). Not sure what to set the speeds at though. Do I set it for max upload speed, or my usual download speed? I've set it to the upload speed (128 kbps) because that's what the manual said, kind of. But the current download says it's going to take days rather than hours (av. 2-5 B/s). Can I stop halfway through? I don't want to leave my computer running for days.

Re: Bill Mollison - Permaculture Design Course - CD sized

yeah, the download will continue where you left off everytime.
mine started slow like that, but went mad 10 minutes into it.
your upload speed is what you allow other pc's to take back from you.
if your connection is slowish, then limit upload to minimum, your after download speed.
but it should be ok just as default, that's how I use it.

Whlst your at it, you may aswell get Bill Mollisons Global Gardener video, 2 hours.
what the heck, get the other cd aswell, Funding the Revolution.

So are other computers already accessing from mine? There's definitely data going out, I don't know what it is. Do I need to limit what other computers access on mine?

I didn't really follow what you said about speeds. Vuze documentation says to set the speed to 80% of max upload, and is focussed on upload speed to get good downloads. My upload speed is 128kbps. Download on a test I ran today is 3584 kbps. But the Vuze settings page suggests that I set kB/s global max. upload speed at 12 and download at 0. I did that but it makes no sense to me (I get the dif between bits and bytes I think, but not why you would set the two different speeds like that, it seems round the wrong way).

I've already got Global Gardener on disc. It was one of the first things I ever saw about permaculture, played on the tv here in the 90s. Still love it. I'll check out the other one though, haven't heard of that. cheers.

Re: Bill Mollison - Permaculture Design Course - CD sized

ahh..ok, yeah the zero setting actually works at unlimited.
so 12 for upload, 0 for download which will be limited only by your isp speed.
sounds like a perfect setting for your connection, should already be set at that level by default though.

other pc's will download from you once you have files to download, it's a bit full onto explain it all, you won't notice it really,
they can only access what you have downloaded from vuse basically, unless you seed files yourself, so they can't access your actuall hard drive. for now just have fun, download whatever you like and in a few weeks, you'll master it.

it's amazing what is out there , type in permaculture, gardening ect, heaps of things to look at.
there's one called, "an introduction to permaculture" it's huge, 12 gigabytes! might have to do that one over a few months :)

Re: Bill Mollison - Permaculture Design Course - CD sized

Wow! This is quite a thread. I may as well come out and say I use this bit torrent file as my primary source of motivation and education. I have watched or listened to In Grave Danger of Falling Food about a thousand times and will probably watch another thousand times. The Pc Design book is a little too heavy reading for me. But I do take a stab at it from time to time. Its a good cure for insomnia. The introduction to permaculture book is a must have. If you don't get a copy of the book you are definitely cheating yourself. The best way to get the bit torrent file is to have a geek friend get it for you. Takes about a week to download. One full weekend if you have high speed access. I hope that Bill will overlook the distribution issues that this raises as the bit torrent file does create awareness and in my case continued motivation and guidance. If I am ever pressured to pay for my copy I will be happy to do so. One last thing. Have a very good antivirus protection whenever using peer to peer servers such as utorrent, bit torrent, or whatever you use to download any type of file. I use Norton Internet Security. Yep I paid for it. And yes it cost $$$.

Re: Bill Mollison - Permaculture Design Course - CD sized

I must admit to having to work through a few ethical dilemmas. More to do with the man who recorded the PDC and made it available digitially for sale, than with Mollison. I have been a bit concerned about this thread being here, as I know there was a heavy duty thread about the DVD version of this PDC in the past, and that the man who made that DVD is a member of this forum.

I know there have been discussions about p/c and money before, and I have no problem with people making a living from the work they do, I think that is essential. I also know alot of people that simply don't have access to the amounts of money to spend on many p/c things. I have bought some p/c books, but I use the library alot too. I feel bad about taking the PDC, and yet I also know that this is probably the only way I would have access to it (or any PDC for that matter). I feel better because I know that there are people who can afford it who are paying for the DVD version, and I will point people I know in the direction of that if they can afford it. And I am very grateful that there is some access (albeit difficult) for people that can't pay.

Re: Bill Mollison - Permaculture Design Course - CD sized

Which is what that other thread discussion was about.
yeah, if your going to make money from permaculture, like doing courses or market gardening, then you certainly should be
paying for your literature, the music industry went through this, and in the end realised that internet downloading actually
    increased over the counter sales.
nothings like the real thing so courses will always be essential for anyone wanting to learn permaculture seriously,
but for the millions that will never think about permaculture, should have it thrown in there face, if just 1% of them people
look at it and take it up, well that's tens of thousands that never ever would of.

That's pretty much how I see it too. And I have no problem taking stuff from people that have lots of resources (eg the corportate music industry). I'm still not totally comfortable about doing it when it's someone's livelihood (although it's not actual lost income in this case), but I'm getting there ;-) What's helped is really getting that the PDC is a treasure and that I need to use it well. I also have a sense that I need to give back to the p/c movement in some way and am thinking that through.

I thought that other thread was pretty rough, and that the man who made the DVDs got given a hard time that was largely unnecessary. There's room for both making a living from ventures that are charged for AND free sharing of resources.
