The above articles indicate there is $300 Million available to create an answer in a globally changing way. What are the causes to these global problems, what are the alternatives? are there examples where These alternatives have worked? can we bring these answers together?

    Proposals for Settlement-Scale Applications

This is an evolving description of how the GCoT model (Smart Garden City) can be applied in varying circumstances.

Here it has been attempted to show how this model can function to assist in the amelioration of long-established refugee camps, for example Dadaab in Kenya, which has grown to nearly 330,000 residents and was first established in 1992. More information on Dadaab by clicking here.

The following hyperlinks will take you specific posts in this forum thread. After clicking the hyperlink, it is best to wait a moment for the page to settle on the intended post. It may be necessary to make a note of the post #number and scroll up or down in the forum to find the post, all posts are numbered.

The following hyperlinked posts aim to explain how the GCoT model may be considered, in a planned response to improving conditions for established refugee camp, or indeed for planning new ones. There are also a lot of related information, articles, videos and links on this forum thread.

The GCoT Model – A Complex Systems Model For Spatio-temporal Settlement Design, Planning, Adaptation, Ecological Restoration, Economic Growth and Biourbanism; Employing Fractal Geometry, Recursion, Complexity, Emergence, Landscape Ecology, Biological Remediation, Agroecology and Central Place Theory

    Abstract
Synthesis of related subjects into synergistic models for planning communication can facilitate multi-disciplinary strategy, for adaptation planning. This is relevant for planning and adapting complex systems such as cities and other human population centres. This paper combines three fields within an holistic model proposed for elucidating urban complexity, improving energy efficiency, and for adaptation planning. Idealised models for transport infrastructure, mixed-use spatial design and, green infrastructure for ecosystem services are combined forming an holistic model. This model is presented with reference to peer-reviewed articles and other publications. An implementation approach is proposed, showing its scalability, how diversity may be maintained in urban form and function, reconciled with unity in spatial planning, achieved through participatory urban planning approaches combined with established methods for ecological landscape restoration to achieve regenerative and sustainable development. A conceptualised, scaled and scalable spatial pattern is presented at city-scale, as an ecologically regenerative “smart” garden city model, and is referred to as the GCoT Model – acronym for Garden City of Today (Busby, 2014). This is presented for prospective use as an operational model and conceptual aid for strategic and adaptation planning, urban design and urban modeling.

Hello Marcus - First, I want to say that the amount of intellectual capital invested in this topic is something I'm very familiar with. I have done exercise almost exactly like this in breadth and complexity, which leads me to a fundamental question: what do you hope to get by putting all of this effort and information out there to the universe? I see no "call to action" for anyone reading this. I would love to see something like: 'Okay - these are the next steps - I'm hoping to gauge interest in the development o work clusters in a variety of areas...etc...If you're interested in the stakeholder outreach aspect of this, please sign up here...policy/zoning research, here...etc" In sum - how are you going to make the shift from all this wonderful theory and planning into practical action?

    Dear Tom,
    Thank you for your question(s).

You can follow the twitter feed @FractalCities for related material.

There are three key areas to realising a settlement along these lines...
    1. Agricultural Development and Landscape Restoration
    2. Participatory Urban Planning and Architecture/Building
    3. Transport and Infrastructure
In application to refugee situation, this differs tremendously. I recommend listening to Kilian Kleinschmidt (twitter : @KilianK), who is, by partnership of the IPA switxboard Innovation and Planning Agency invovled with @RefugeeCities/https://refugeecities.org/.

If you are interested in stakeholder outreach for projects with similar objectives, please I recommend Commonland Foundation. Here is an excellent summary/introduction from CEO Willem Ferwerda (@WillemFerwerda) :

    And also this recent presentation:

If you are interested in a "call to action" at this stage, I would recommend joining the Research, Training and Innovation Centers for Ecological Restoration

There are now over 6800 people at the following URL discussing the creation of Ecosystem Restoration Camps. Over 725 of these have joined the Ecosystem Restoration Cooperative as founding members pledging 120 Euros per year to help finance the development of the camps. Additional funds have been secured. The idea is self organization and self governance of the camps with the cooperative creating the first camp(s) and providing a template that can help restore ecosystem function all over the world.

"Refugee Camps Could Become Permanent Cities via @seeker"

Refugee Camps Could Become Permanent Cities
A non-profit is trying to turn refugee camps into "refugee cities" to help better the lives of millions of displaced people throughout the world.

    BY MOLLY FOSCO
Refugee Cities is working to turn refugee camps into permanent cities, so displaced people can set-up their own local commerce and infrastructure. These special enterprise zones (SEZ) would offer refugees more opportunities than current aid strategies have been able to provide.

The jobs and revenue created within these cities would benefit those in the camps as well as host countries. They could also equip displaced people with new job skills in a number of industries for when they return to their homeland.

"We have received a lot of interest from tech companies interested in training refugees and outsourcing coding work or simpler internet-based work via platforms like Upwork," Michael Miller, executive director of Refugee Cities, told Seeker. "Displaced people might have the opportunity to learn skills useful in the digital economy that they can apply back home."

Miller mentioned that some companies like RBK (ReBoot Camp), and Techfugees, are currently training refugees in engineering work and are forming relationships with Silicon Valley firms in hopes they will hire them in the future.

The fact that these cities will be built in Special Economic Zones could add to the benefits for the host countries. SEZ give a government the opportunity to experiment with new policies that don't have a nationwide effect. In China, certain tax and business incentives implemented within SEZ have spurred rapid economic growth in the country.

Many of these host countries are in desperate need of an economic boost. As of 2015, 65.3 million people have been displaced globally, and population growth, climate change and continued civil unrest are expected to make the refugee crisis worse going forward.

RELATED: Paris Is Turning Its Famous 'Love Locks' Into Cash for Refugees

Refugee Cities is somewhat critical of how the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has handled the crisis in the past. The UNHCR has been very active in providing aid where possible, but their main focus is on donations rather than preparing refugees for the future.

"Despite their best efforts, the resources of the UNHCR consistently fall short of its requirements to meet people's basic needs, let alone to achieve any long-term development goals," Refugee Cities writes on its website.

UNHCR appears to recognize that aid alone won't work. Earlier this year, they ran the Refugee Challenge for the What Design Can Do conference in Amsterdam, where competitors designed products that will assist in the development and integration of refugees, particularly those in urban areas.

UNHCR has also stopped promoting refugee camps as a viable long-term solution for displacement, and is focusing on integrating refugees into local populations instead. "From the perspective of refugees, alternatives to camps means being able to exercise rights and freedoms, make meaningful choices regarding their lives and have the possibility to live with greater dignity, independence and normality as members of communities," UNHCR said in their 2014 Policy on Alternatives to Camps.

RELATED: Is The United States The Best Country For Refugees?

Refugees are also taking it upon themselves to change living conditions inside the camps. At the Zaatari camp in Jordan, residents figured out how to power their businesses with electricity from the power grid, and they even built swimming pools to find some relief from the intense summer heat.

Refugee Cities plans to set-up their locations in buildings and warehouses near the existing camps, and turn them into business incubators for residents. Once the refugees leave, the spaces can be used as a number of different urban facilities like retail shops, offices, social service or apartment complexes.

Despite the difficulty of getting these cities approved, Miller is convinced that once officials see the benefits, they will want to make them permanent. "It's important to note that after the residents have been working, operating their own businesses, and being educated, it will be much more likely the government will want them to stay, because they will be contributing strongly to the economy and society," Miller told Seeker.

"Most refugees return to their homeland if and when it becomes livable," he continued. "[But] over time, if the city is free and in a good location, it should become a thriving area with a mix of nationals and immigrants living and working together. That's not a place most governments will want to close down."

The next step is gaining more investors as well as finding "strategic partners to help advance the effort, including international NGOs, government aid and development agencies, the UNHCR and inter-governmental development institutions," Refugee Cities said. The company is currently scouting locations that have the least opposition toward the idea of a refugee city, the most need for one and the most potential for economic gain.

With the right location, investors and support from the local community, Refugee Cities hopes to move forward with their first project in 2017, but can't reveal any details just yet. "We have some exciting prospects in the works that, if things go well, would mean we're very close," Miller said. "I have to keep that under wraps for now, unfortunately."

    Ecosystem Restoration Camps &
    Ecosystem Restoration Cooperative

    John Dennis Liu
    15 December at 19:11

Greetings to everyone in this group.

The Ecosystem Restoration Camps concept is quite clearly moving from the theoretical to the physical. Since July 11, 2016 when the idea was first discussed on Facebook the public site has continuously grown to over 7200 people discussing many things. From this over 760 people from approximately 50 countries have joined as members of the cooperative. Intrinsically, we all know that we can't address climate change, hydrological dysfunction, biodiversity loss, food insecurity, poverty, disparity, war, and individual or societal depression by clicking like on Facebook.

I feel moved to communicate with you because it has been some time and I don't want anyone to lose interest in what I believe is, The Great Work of Our Time. (Permaculture Magazine article 'Great Work of Our Time') What I'm writing are my own thoughts but all have been discussed with various members and are intended to reflect what I'm thinking and hoping to see emerge. As the size of the members grows governance and decision making must grow with it. This must emerge organically through transparency and participation so that the movement can grow to embrace the largest numbers. Watching the level of dysfunction around the world for this to work I believe we must nurture a trusting, joyful, loving collaboration. This could be the largest challenge that we face.

The Camps are envisioned to allow all of us who choose, to use direct action to do something positive about our problems. The people in the camps can carefully study and restore watersheds, create huge amounts of organic soils and propagate and plant out keystone species of trees, shrubs and grasses. The vision is that the people will all live, work and eat together in an equalitarian setting. Regenerative agriculture will also be practiced and taught so that all can create resilient landscapes and especially to feed the campers.

So far the restoration work has been discussed to be limited to a few hours a day, 5 days a week (continuing for years) and daily study, meditation, recreation. culture and good organic food is expected to be the norm in the camps. Individual camps are not envisioned to become huge, most people will come for some weeks or some months so many people will experience participation and study in the camps. There may be some camp staff that choose this as their life and livelihood. How that will be organized has not yet been decided and many who have this in mind should consider it carefully and discuss it with the group.

The number of camps is envisioned to grow and to be set up where they are invited to support communities to train and act in restoring ecological function. There are many invitations already which will have to be evaluated. The first camp is being considered for Spain because there are benefits to being connected to communities who have already accepted the idea of restoration of the entire region and we can join them as we learn to camp and become proficient at restoration.

Everything that has happened so far to create and grow this movement has been done voluntarily through donations of time, energy and resources. It is interesting to see that we can do powerful things outside of the transactional economy just by choosing to work together. We need to discuss this now, while we are in the camps and to consider what this means. We are trying to arrange that the camps will not be within the transactional economy. How to do that is still emerging but it will clearly require that we grow and raise most of our own food.

Ultimately we will need to use some funds. Although no funds have yet been collected through membership pledges we have theoretically raised over 90,000 Euros. We have had offers of additional support that theoretically doubles the members pledges. Through some long hours of discussion and online forums a budding organizational structure is emerging that is designed to provide transparency and participation. Soon those who are interested in active roles who have not yet found their way to working on this will have the opportunity to join in many various aspects of design and organization. Ideally, everyone will have the chance to participate, and to lead in service if they have the humility and the capacity.

With the current political situation in the world I think the growth of the Cooperative and Camps movement may hold a way forward for millions and potentially everyone who feels that they are marginalized to regain their individual sovereignty and to learn to collectively work with other free people to do what needs to be done to grow as people and to restore the Earth. We will not be able to do this with the same mindset and values that created the problems. We need to learn to trust, forgive and love as we move forward. Although I'm told that I have a reputation for talking too much, my advice is that we learn to appreciate silence. This will help us easily separate the profound from the superficial.

I wish you all good health as we move into what are holidays for many and then into the new year. I'm grateful to work together with so many people who are interested to heal the Earth and the Human Spirit. Let us commit to working in Peace and Joy as this movement goes forward.

Hey Marcus, are your design patterns being considered as models for these camps? (I haven't done FB for a while).

Hello Bill, good to hear from you.

As far as I am aware, nobody has mentioned using the design patterns presented in the Smart Garden City model. I did share some weblinks in the Facebook group.

As I understand, (although I may not be correct), the Restoration Camps will primarily or initially focus upon ecological restoration, landscape restoration, skills and resource sharing. They will commence with an initial base camp (seed), acting as a training centre with a core team of facilitators and teachers, and evolve from this as skills and experience come together and grow, towards a longer-term camp. There is the potential in the long term to establish permanent settlement with local planning permissions etc. presumably with permanent buildings etc. Each site and every community possess unique socioeconomic and physical characteristics so it is not possible to predetermine. A combination of ecological restoration, restoration agriculture, green building, renewable energy and so forth.

I believe the Restoration Camps will follow a simlar model to the tried and tested model developed by Commonland Foundation; summarised as a 3-Zone model, with 4 Returns (#4Returns). There is a great article here:

    (2)Explain your idea(maximum 400 words)

#SmartGardenCity is an holistic “idea” for a city, completely fossil free - a #postfossilcity! It is a model for a city in optimum. Many doubt this is possible, however - many doubted electricity could be harnessed when it remained just an “idea.” How far we have come!

This design entry was partly-inspired by GM’s Futurama - in the respect of imagining an antonym! That is why this post-fossil city proposal includes a design for a transport network that excludes private motor vehicles, and is zero-carbon.

    https://circlesdesign.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/transport-hierarchy.html

This proposal is for a regenerative form of urbanism, that is also ecologically regenerative. So by its very presence, it can benefit the planet Earth - this can be usual for a city.

    https://circlesdesign.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/regenerative-urbanism.html

The proposed city is designed to facilitate collaboration, interaction and co-creation for community well-being. The spectrum of opportunity fostered by the proposed fabric, caters for its citizens to innovate and create. This blend of built and ecologically-functioning environment can have massive health benefits by contact and interaction with nature.

Three key components are addressed and synergised in this proposal:

Built Environment, which is mixed-use, walkable, transit-orientated, compact, complex, diverse and connected with good porosity and proximity.

A Mosiac Landscape of Green Infrastructure for ecosystem services and the many associated benefits (psychological, cognitive, physiological, social, aesthetic, recreational, cultural, spiritual, tangible) for increased resilience to climate change.

And, a zero-carbon public transit system which employs a fractal network for maximum coverage and highest efficiency and interface.

In essence - the key concept for this proposal is to design for a new type of economy - the emergent economy. This proposal is an attempt at designing a built environment to cater specifically for a green-blue circular economy of proximity.

This model can be used for adaptation and amelioration for existing cities, to increase resilience to climatic change, improve functioning and efficiency and create employment opportunity.

An interesting aspect with this proposal is emphasis upon the integration of green infrastructure, whereby food, materials and fuels are generated within the city organism. It is a living, holistic system that is biomimetic. Reducing food miles while increasing resilience.

If you win €1,000, how would you develop your idea into an imagination? (maximum 400 words)

It is difficult to convey this idea concisely. Because it is an attempt to design for an entire city - and culture, fit for a post-fossil future. This can only be done effectively by a team and through collaborative design, this can yield much better results and can facilitate the communication of an idea much more effectively.
I have considered many questions over the past 10 years related to this - as many of us have! I also believe I found some answers. The easiest way to convey a thousand words in an image ! The first image attached attempts this, It is a fractal, scalable, walkable, green, biophilic, mixed-use, transit orientated and so forth.
The green spaces are arranged to exhibit the principles of landscape ecology - patches, connected by corridors and green bridges to facilitate species migration and avoid habitat fragmentation...

I began modelling some section in 3d, but this takes a lot of time!To be selected as a finalist can be a great beginning to making all the words come to life! I would appreciate hugely, the opportunity to work with, receive academic support and expert guidance, as part of a team to convey the concepts of a post-fossil city.

I would love to travel to Netherlands and Utrecht University & Urban Futures Studio. To win the competition I would love to build a tangible physical 3d model of a post fossil city - like the one in Futurama and be part of a team designing such an exhibition - where children can go away with the pin badge “I’ve seen the Future” and these young engineers and architects of the future will work towards that like they once did after visiting Futurama. So I look forward to seeing in the real, instead of the consumerist dream, the creatorists dream!

On a personal level I would very much like to further my studies towards attaining a university-level qualification too.

Utrecht University’s Urban Futures Studio have announced the 10 finalists for their Post-Fossil City Contest, judged by a jury which included MVRDV co-founder Winy Maas. Each of the successful submissions responded to the contest’s call for the design of a sustainable city no longer reliant on non-renewable energy sources. Designers and makers were invited to envision this new future, which “will reshape our cities and everyday lives so radically that it is hard to imagine what it might feel, taste, smell, and look like.”

Out of the 250 total entries, below are the 10 selected finalists along with a snippet of their proposed futures as described by the competition website.

Together we can Restore the Earth

Healthy, functional ecosystems illustrate that the Earth provides us with clean air, enough food, water, and energy – all that is needed for life to flourish. Unfortunately, around the planet these ecosystems are under great threat from human impact.

Be part of the great work of our time

Under the guidance of John D. Liu (expert on ecological restoration) and with support from Regeneration International, the Permaculture Research Institute, the World Permaculture Association and the Commonland Foundation, a large movement has been growing since July 2016, culminating in the formation of the Ecosystem Restoration Camps movement.

People around the world sense that the systems sustaining life are under threat.

The Ecosystem Restoration Camps are a hands-on opportunity to harness this energy and have a direct impact on regenerating a given landscape.

How can you support the Camps?

If global citizens like you, donate as little as €10 per month, we can make it possible to establish Ecosystem Restoration Camps around the world.

First, a site in need of ecological restoration is found and the land is leased to the camp for a number of years in order to be rehabilitated. Once the land is secured, on-site staff will hired to support incoming volunteers and manage day-to-day operations.

We are committed to the vision of creating paradise on Earth. Together, we will be on our way to restoring the natural ecosystems of this planet!

Become a Member of the Ecosystem Restoration Camps Movement

    Our Vision

We envision a fully-functional, peaceful, abundant, biologically diverse Earth brought about through cooperative efforts for the ecological restoration of degraded lands.

    Our Mission
To work together to restore ecological functionality (natural infiltration and retention of all available rainfall and moisture, fertile organic soils and returning complete vegetative cover of trees and grasses) to designated areas and to build “Research, Training and Innovation Centers for Ecological Restoration” to engage people in inquiry into ecological restoration, to train people in existing techniques and for the innovation of new techniques for restoring degraded lands in perpetuity.

    About the Camps

The first camp will be set up in Altiplano, Spain. It will be a model for us to showcase the potential of the restoration camps. The Permaculture Research Institute (PRI) and the World Permaculture Association (WPA) will hold educational training in the camp. Regeneration International (RI) has agreed to broadly publicize and support the Cooperative and the Camps worldwide.

There are already requests for these camps in many different parts of the world. Some members have begun to collect these requests. If you know a spot suited for a camp, please let us know.

Help to realize the Grey Water Infiltration System for the first camp in Spain!

Why do we need a grey water system?
We are in the Altiplano of Spain to restore a severely damaged ecosystem in a very desolate and dry land. Before we can live there, we need to have an ecological system to deal with our grey water. We will live simply, but even then one person will use up to 40 liters per day. The camp will be populated by a maximum of 50 people. This means we need 3 greywater infiltration system to catch the run-off. Nutrient cycling and conservation of water is essential to reduce the camp footprint and return all resources back to the land. The minimal water we use will be cycled to tree crops and restoration areas to build soil and increase available water during summer drought. You donation will ensure the hydrological cycle in the camp and help restore the landscape to a self sufficient ecosystem.

These infiltration chambers are a resource for deep rooted plants, they are intentional systems designed to create as much plant power as possible and to guarantee that the water entering the soil root zone is completely clean. This way we do not waste our used water. Instead, we use it in such a way that it will help restore the soil biology.

    Hello people, we are... camping!
In April of this year we send you our last newsletter. In that newsletter we asked you to become a contributing member of Ecosystem Restoration Camps.
Many of you did, so, since that period, many things started happening. The camp is taking off. The pioneer group already lives there, the big groundwork starts next week and over 300 members are already actively contributing to this idea becoming real. But we need much more. Hands and Funds and Creativity and Promotion. Everyone can help in his or her own country and way and all help is welcome.

With this newsletter we also like to thank everyone who is already helping the Ecosystem Restoration Camps. Please continue your wonderful support of the creation of camps that will restore this planet, step by step, to its original Paradise state.

    Message from John D. Liu
Dear Friends: I hope that you and your families are well and happy.

Over the years and decades of studying ecology and climate related subjects I've come to understand that it is the percentages and total amounts of vegetation and the percentages and total amounts of organic matter in the soils that are the indicators and determinants of ecological health.

But human civilization has not acted from these principles, but out of ignorance of these systems and from greed in choosing to value the material things we have extracted from the functional earth systems rather than Life and the Earth's ecological systems themselves. This is a huge mistake... that leads to many consequences that we are experiencing now.

Very positive developments are occurring right now all over the world. Millions of people are already working to restore health and fertility to soils. There are successful projects in many parts of the World to rehydrate dehydrated biomes. Large numbers of people are working to protect and regenerate the amazing biodiversity that over evolutionary time altered a molten rock into a beautiful garden ... a miraculous paradise.

Join us and meet John Liu at Roggebotstaete on July 18
Ecosystem Restoration Camps and Roggebotstaete -the young and edible estate in Flevopolder The Netherlands- organize an event for the whole family and all your friends on Tuesday July 18. If you are located in The Netherlands or just over its borders, this is an afternoon you do not want to miss.
We start at 14.00h. John D. Liu will give a short introduction about ecosystems and why it is so important to protect and restore them. For the children we will have a separate children’s programme. After the introduction we will follow a completely new organised trail all through the estate! We will also do some volunteer work, in the food forest.

At the end of our trail we will find, starting from 17.00h lovely pizzas freshly baked in the stone oven of Roggebotstaete. We kindly ask you to register, so that we know how many pizzas we have to bake. Entrance fee is only for covering costs: € 15,- for adults and € 10,- for children under 12 years old.

    > Come to the feast at Roggebotstaete

Would you like to design our first camp?
The groundwork for the whole terrain will start next week, the next big job which has to happen then is the design of the camp.

Wait a minute. Design? A camp is a camp isn't it?

No, we think the whole experience of going to an Ecosystem restoration camp must be one of healing, meeting, learning and most importantly enjoying. We are looking for camp designers that bring this extra, who understand how to build both frugal and sustainable, with natural materials; who are creative and will help us to create a camp that will become and stay beautiful for the coming five years. Please find the job description here.

Be quick. Applications end on the 20/07

Ad Hoc Urbanism: 7 Social Housing Projects Inspired by Informal Settlements
    • Jack Hanly

After recently highlighting a collection of contemporary low-rise high-density social housing projects, we thought we'd turn to another set of projects that are responding to the need for equitable, affordable and accessible housing. While the previous collection focused on the specific “low-rise, high-density” typology which has at times been criticized for its top-down planning approach, the following projects are unique in their desire to mimic some of the traits found in informal settlements that have developed organically over time.

In addition to assuming certain characteristics of vernacular spatial organization in their meandering pathways, agglomeration of cubic forms and unpredictable enclaves of public space, these projects also allow for a degree of flexibility in form and function over time. They are thus reflective of a kind of ‘ad hoc’ urbanism that both responds to the ways in which people actually use these spaces and enables them to customize the functionality of the buildings themselves. These projects then combine the infrastructural foundations of solutions offered by architects and planners with the unpremeditated and ‘accidental’ opportunities found in informal settlements.

      [IMG][IMG]

      [IMG][IMG]

La Muralla Roja by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, Calp, Spain

This classic project by famed postmodernist Ricardo Bofill reimagines the Mediterranean casbah in light of a social housing program. The building clearly references Arab vernacular architecture in its bold red adobe materials and winding circulation patterns, while adhering to a strict organization based on Greek geometry. The formal makeup also alludes to the principles of constructivism, which emphasized the political potential of exuberant forms tied to a refined social end.

      [IMG][IMG]

      [IMG][IMG]

Social Housing in Ceuta by IND [Inter National Design], Ceuta, Spain

This social housing development in the European enclave of Ceuta on the coast of North Africa similarly styles itself after the informal settlements found in the neighboring areas. The project merges the European urbanism of slab block housing with the ad hoc forms of these self-developed settlements. The negative space created by the public terraces in the site’s section recalls the shifting spatial arrangements of informal settlements.

      [IMG][IMG]

      [IMG][IMG]

Fittja Terraces by Kjellander + Sjoberg, Stockholm, Sweden

Far away from the Mediterranean climes of the previous two projects, this Swedish social housing project in a neighborhood with a significant existing stock of these developments organizes itself around three distinct types of areas: town center, open meadow and interconnecting buildings between the two. The open public spaces and pedestrian pathways chop up monotonous sight-lines and leave space for future growth.
