It just grew orange flowers from the top of the plant for the first time! Was so excited but always in the back of my mind I wondered if it's the infamous, 'fake cardamon'? It should have white and pink flowers growing at the base according to my research.
I will take a photo as soon as I can get motivated. Would anyone know what plant I might have in the mean time?
I bought this plant many years ago and have divided it over and over, left it behind at rental houses etc.
    Orange flowers grrr.

    Hello cosmic
Any hint of ginger when you crush the leaves?

    Hello Cosmic and PP,

As luck would have it I have collected 4 different 'cardamom' plants over 20 years and NOT ONE OF THEM ever produced anything like the cardamom seed you can buy. I am convinced that I will find a 'true' cardamom one day but only by having some seed with me and doing a 'sniff' test on the crushed leaves or finding a flowering plant.

I even looked around the Cairns botanical garden a while ago and they have a lot of 'ginger' type plants there but didnt see any cardamom.

Whilst writing this I did the inevitable google. It is available perhaps I should buy some. I have the climate, shade position and water. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TRUE-CARDAMOM...3D10%26ps%3D63

    cheers,

    ho-hum

I just bought some of those seeds from Ebay. Fingers crossed they grow.
It doesn't smell like ginger. It has a strong perfume when you brush past the plant. It smells gorgeous.

The leaves are great as part of a Tai bouquet garni with lemon grass and Vietnamese mint.

Yes, the cardamom i grew had a large cluster of white flowers tucked in at the base of the plant.

    Amomum subulatum.

The leaves have an oily,(?) spicy fragrance when crushed.

I don't think it is hot enough for it to set seed in my area but the leaves can be used to wrap food in.
Then, they could have got easily lost, given where they flower.

I didn't realise that there are so many varieties
    http://www.theepicentre.com/Spices/cardamom.html
    and cultivars
    http://www.sikkimagrisnet.org/en/Agricu ... eties.aspx

    Elettaria cardamomum syn: Amomum cardamomum
    Malabar cardamom
    Mysore cardamom
    Vazukka cardamom

Do you have a photo, you can post, of your "orange cardamom"?
