    Honestly, I stopped bothering all together after reading Wild Apples by Henry David Thoreau. I still grow nut trees and plan on adding more, but I realize they aren't only for me, and the squirrels are incredibly important for the health of ANY forest.

    Pak I think you have actually made a really insightful reply.

    nomad guy - why are squirrels a problem - what are they actually doing? We don't have them in Australia (plenty of other challenging critters though!) so I can't claim knowledge (apart from thinking they were cute watching them in the parks when I was in Chicago some years back). What controls their population numbers naturally?

    Your annual vege garden may need to be fenced and protected like Fort Knox to keep damage down. Making a place for them in your system and giving them what they need might keep them confined to a less sensitive part of the property. And make a place for their predators to keep the population growth in check.

    Permaculture systems need diversity - not wide scale killing of species that we humans decide are bad for some reason.
