I was wonder if anyone knew any certain ground cover, shrubs, long term and shade tolerant trees that grew well in Chile's mediterranean area besides the native nitrogen fixing species?

My friend ask a valid question I thought, which was that if there was alot of rain over a period time would there be a problem with drainage from the cardboard layer?
